Yanfei is Liyue's premier legal advisor and one of the best people you can find for getting you out of trouble with the Millelith. She is a four-star pyro catalyst who was released in Genshin Impact version 1.5 on the Zhongli banner rerun. She has an explosive and powerful playstyle that makes her a solid four-star DPS, especially for free-to-play players who don't want to spend their hard-earned money trying to pull Klee, assuming she returns.

To make her a powerful addition to your team, though, there are several things you will need to keep in mind when playing as and building Yanfei. We take a look at everything you need to know to get the most out of this explosive new character.

Updated on July, 3 2021, By Jessica Thomas: Yanfei has earned a lot of love from Genshin Impact fans since her release. She has become a main DPS on many teams and is a great substitute if you can't pull Klee, especially at her C6 constellation. Like any character in the game though, having a powerful Yanfei relies on you knowing what weapons and artifacts to place on her. Building Yanfei with the wrong weapon or artifact set can greatly hamper her damage output and make her a weak party member. The guide below goes over everything you need to know about building Yanfei, how to play Yanfei properly, and what each of her constellations does.

Burning Up The Competition

Yanfei is a DPS with a lot of potential. Many players are putting her in the same league as characters like Tartaglia and Klee, just at her C0 form. For players who really want to burn through their enemies though, Yanfei's constellations can be a real treat:

  • C1 - Every Scarlet Seal Yanfei has reduces her charge attack stamina consumption by 10% and decreases the chance of charge interruption.
  • C2 - The crit rate of Yanfei's charged attack is increased by 20% if an enemy is below half health.
  • C3 - Signed Edict can now be upgraded to level 15.
  • C4 - Using Done Deal now summons a shield that will absorb damage up to 45% of Yanfei's health and gives 250% protection against pyro attacks.
  • C5 - Done Deal can now be upgraded to level 15.
  • C6 - Yanfei can now have an additional Scarlet Seal.

Free-to-play doesn't exactly end in you being able to throw out the primogems needed to get a C6 Yanfei. Having at least a C2 Yanfei will really allow you to get a lot out of a character. Yanfei is a great selfish DPS and will likely be on the field causing reactions as your main damage dealer when enemies follow below half health. In addition, you will generally finding yourself using charged attacks a lot with catalysts, so the 20% extra damage will make things go quickly. This combined with Yafei's C1 ability to reduce stamina gives you the ability to do more charged attacks at once.

If you are planning to invest in a fire DPS then Yanfei is a great pick for trying to get up to C4. C4 Yanfei will get a shield after she uses her elemental bust, helping her to plow through tougher enemies like weekly booses. If you can manage to pull seven Yanfei's, you will also get an additional Scarlet Seal, which allows you to get even more out of her now buffed charged attacks. For best results, throw out your support characters, activate their support abilities, then switch back to Yanfei to start causing reactions and dealing massive amounts of pyro damage.

Burning Up The Competition

Yanfei is a character that will spend a lot of time on the field and can unleash attacks that rival those of some five stars. Her basic attack shoots pyro shots but is a bit different than other catalysts' normal attack. When Yanfei manages to land a hit, she gains a Scarlet Seal. Yanfei at C0 can have up to three Scarlet Seals at a time; each seal will reduce the stamina cost of charged attacks. When you use her charge attack, the Scarlet Seals will be used up, and Yanfei will summon a pyro AoE attack to drop down on enemies.

Signed Edict is Yanfei's elemental skill and will trigger a quick burst of AoE pyro damage to nearby enemies. When Signed Edict is able to successfully damage an enemy, the skill will provide Yanfei with three Scarlet Seals, or four if you have her C6.

Done Deal is her elemental burst and allows her to send out a quick pyro AoE attack. Afterward, the Brilliance status will be applied for a short amount of time. This will periodically summon Scarlet Seals.

Yanfei will gain passive abilities as she is ascended. The first passive she will gain is called Proviso. This skill gives her an additional 5% boost in pyro damage for each Scarlet Seal she uses for six seconds. Her second passive skill unlocks at her fourth assension level and is called Blazing Eye. This gives her additional AoE pyro damage that will equal 80% of her attack power when she lands a critical hit with her charged attack.

Best Yanfei Builds

To get the most out of Yanfei, you will want to place the right weapon and artifacts on her. This can be the difference between taking down enemies within seconds and struggling with a Ruin Guard for several minutes straight. Here are the weapons recommended for Yanfei:

Weapon Base Attack Secondary Stat Ability
Skyward Atlas 48 Attack +7.2% Gives a 12% elemental damage bonus and has a 50% chance of dealing an additional 160% damage to nearby opponents for 15 seconds when using a normal attack.
Solar Pearl 42 Crit Rate +6% Using a normal attack gives a 20% attack boost to elemental attacks, and using elemental attacks gives a 20% damage to normal attacks for six seconds.

Five-star artifacts can all be obtained for free in the game. In the case of Yanfei, there are two really great artifact sets to choose from or mix together if you don't have either of them complete:

Artifact 2-Piece Set 4-Piece Set
Crimson Witch of Flames +15% Pyro Damage causing burning and overload deals an additional 40% damage, and all other reactions get a 15% damage boost. Using a four-piece set also gives an additional bonus to pyro damage.
Lavawalker Decreases Resistance of Pyro Attacks by 40% Yanfei does 35% extra damage against opponents weak to pyro.
Wanderer's Troupe +80 points to Elemental Mastery Increases Yanfei's charge attack damage by 35%.

Supporting Yanfei

Yanfei is not a support character, so you will need to build a team around her. She is pyro, so giving her support teammates that can help to trigger reactions is a must. Here is a list of compatible support characters to place on a team with Yanfei:

  • Fischl
  • Ganyu
  • Beidou
  • Venti
  • Sucrose
  • Barbara
  • Qiqi
  • Xingqiu
  • Chongyun
  • Kaeya
  • Lisa
  • Mona

In addition to being a great choice for combat, Yanfei should also be placed on your Liyue exploration team. Her passive ability Encyclopedic Expertise allows her to show you the location of Liyue specific resources on your mini-map. This is really helpful for completing your weekly battle pass task to collect specialty items from each area.
