Pokemon Go Raids prove to be among the most enjoyable content currently available in the game, often possessing a great deal of challenge, but presenting you with rewards that are often more than worth it. One type of these Raids is Mega Raids, pitting you and your allies against a powerful Mega Evolution and rewarding you with Mega Energy when successful.
You can expect to see Mega Gyarados vacating this type of Raid with the introduction of the Mega Gyarados Raid Day, which takes place on Saturday, October 8, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time. We've got you covered with everything you need to know to successfully take out this powerful Mega Evolution, earning you a Gyarados encounter and Mega Energy.
Recommended Group Size
Being a Mega Raid, this is a Raid that you will want to avoid taking on solo. We recommend a party size of three to five players when battling Mega Gyarados, maximizing your chances of success and securing valuable rewards.
Although Mega Gyarados can be defeated with fewer people, this requires the use of top-tier counters and, still, isn't a guaranteed success. For this reason, we suggest a larger group for this Raid, as you don't want to waste your time and resources for nothing.
Mega Gyarados: Strengths And Weaknesses
Unlike Gyarados in its standard form, Mega Gyarados is a Water/Dark Dual-type Pokemon, altering its specific strengths and weaknesses. As far as its strengths, Mega Gyarados is resistant to Psychic, Dark, Fire, Ghost, Ice, Steel, and Water attacks, so make sure you avoid using these.
Mega Gyarados is double-resistant to Psychic-type attacks.
Regarding weaknesses, Mega Gyarados is weak against Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, and Grass attacks. For this reason, it is recommended that you use Pokemon of these types and those with strong attacks of these types.
Using attacks that match the type of that Pokemon will do increased damage to the opponent. This is known as Same Type Attack Bonus - STAB for short - and is extremely useful when trying to maximize your damage output.
Mega Gyarados: Best Counter Picks
Due to its weaknesses, you will want to use strong Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, or Grass-type Pokemon against Mega Gyarados. We have put together several choices for each type, proving to be extremely effective against this tough Raid Pokemon.
Although the following Pokemon prove to be the most effective against Mega Gyarados, you can easily find success using other Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, or Grass Types.
