Dvalin was a dragon that was corrupted by the Abyss Order and the first boss of Genshin Impact. He is now known by the people of Mondstadt as Stormterror and is a weekly boss that the player can fight in order to get rare drops. Like with Childe, there are several different levels players can choose from, with the higher fight levels giving better rewards.

Depending on your party and how you play the game though, Dvalin can be an irritating boss battle that takes way too much of your time. The guide below gives you some excellent tips on slaying this anemo powered dragon.

Prepare Before Battle

You should never just run into a boss fight in Genshin Impact without doing some prep. Stormterror may be an easier boss to most, but that doesn't mean you can't get killed. Preparing properly for the fight does not only help to ensure you win, but it can help speed up the fight so you can run off to find treasure or experience other parts of the game.

Before heading into the battle, cook up some food (like fried eggs for revival) and adjust your party. You are going to want to bring a bow user as even a catalyst doesn't have a long enough range to hit Stormterror at some points during the fight. Characters like Venti and Ganyu can do tons of damage with their charge shots, but free-to-play players can easily use Fischl, Diona, or Amber.

  • As a bonus, Diona can also pop her shield to make Stormterror's attacks hurt less.

If you aren't taking a bow character into battle, then keep in mind you're going to need to climb up Stormterror in order to damage him in his downed state. Geo Traveler can make this climb a bit easier, as Dvalin's neck can sometimes be a bit glitchy when players try to climb it.

Learn Stormterror's Attack Patterns

Stormterror isn't a very complicated boss when it comes to attacks; in all honesty, he is pretty easy to avoid. Stormterror can try to attack you physically by biting at your character or diving at you; make sure to stay away from his center to avoid these attacks. He can also shoot an impressively strong breath of air out that can usually be avoided by running to the edge of the platform. Keep in mind that you can fall off of the platform and exercise caution when dodging. Falling will not fail the battle, but it will damage your character.

  • Use attack intervals to heal with Barbara or activate a shield.

In addition, he can shoot wind balls and cause meteors to rain down onto the field. These can both be avoided by simply dashing around and keeping out of the strike zone. The real problem comes when he uses his ultimate attack. This causes the ground beneath you to crack, and as long as you are standing on top of it, you will continually be damaged. Even at lower levels, the damage can easily drain your health before you have a chance to kill Stormterror.

Use Wind Currents

Wind Currents will appear throughout the battle, especially when Stormterror unleashes his ultimate. Use these currents to escape to a platform that isn't suffering from elemental cracks. During the fight, you may also get a chance to use a current; these can be an excellent way to keep yourself from being damaged and quite literally gain the high ground.

  • Be sure to watch your stamina as you can fall while gliding.

Damaging Stormterror

You can't just start the battle and immediately begin dealing damage to the dragon himself. Stormterror has a shield that must be taken out before you can directly deal damage to his health bar. You will want to attack him the most when he places his claws on the platform. During this period of time, you will notice that his shield depletes faster than it does when he is flying into you; this is his vulnerable period.

When you deplete his shield, he will fall to the ground exposing the crystal on his back. You will want to directly target the crystal to deal damage to his health.

  • Avoid using element burst until Stormterror is downed for maximum damage.

When trying to break down Stormterror's shield, try to trigger reactions as things will go much faster. It is a bit harder to maximize damage output with reactions when he is downed since you have to hit the crystal in such a short amount of time before he gets up again.
